Welcome to Just Travelling Through

Hi! My name’s Stuart. Just a normal lad from Yorkshire who travels around the world and this is my story.

It all started for me thanks to a friend I used to work with. His stories of travelling to far off places inspired me to do the same and once I eventually took the plunge I hardly looked back. My first trip was back in 2010 as I travelled across Europe via Interrail for a month. Not only was that my first time staying in hostels, backpacking and travel in general, but it was the very first time I ever left the UK. It was full of so many amazing experiences that I just couldn’t wait to do it again and it’s been pretty much all go since then.

Every time I’ve visited a new place I’ve been faced with new challenges as I constantly meet my desire to push myself further and see how much trouble I can get into. Climbing an active volcano in Chile, a couple of skydives in Australasia, volunteering with big cats in South Africa, seeing some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, learning how to surf (badly) and camping for five days through Torres del Paine national park are just a few of my unforgettable experiences.

From natural wonders to manmade marvels, I’ve been lucky to witness many incredible things. When I started out I never imagined I’d have ridden a helicopter to land on a glacier or been driven around a race circuit in a NASCAR. I’ve seen many of the world’s most famous sports stadiums as well as some of own personal favourites such as the Colosseum in Rome or the giant Moai of Easter Island.

I’ve enjoyed so many amazing experiences and I love sharing them with other people. One of my favourite parts of travelling is meeting other people, whether locals or from further afield, and sharing stories. Where you’ve been, where you’re going and things to look out for. Some of my best travelling experiences have happened in places I never knew existed before I set foot in a country.

I was lucky enough to fulfil another goal a couple of years ago when I moved to Spain. I always wanted to live in another country and experience the difference between day to day life and visiting a city for a matter of days. Working as an English Language teacher allowed me to do just that. Spending most of the last three years in the Northern Spanish cities of Santander and Coruña as well as a summer on the Mediterranean in Valencia.

There will always be more to see and so many options. For me, one of the beautiful things about travelling is everyone does it differently. What works for one person may not necessarily be good for another. I have a target of what I’d like to visit but it’s constantly changing. The list of countries I’ve visited (spending longer in some than others) is currently over 30 spread out across six of the continents. I drew up a list of where I wanted to travel before I’d even started (New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Scandanavia and Hungary) and earlier this year I ticked off the last of those when I visited Copenhagen.

Now I have a new list, which (predictably) is even longer than my original. The reason for each is a little different or I just have a feel for it and no real explainable reason why it’s on there.

  • Switzerland
  • Faroe Islands
  • Colombia
  • Bhutan
  • Greenland
  • Venezuela
  • Ecuador
  • Malta
  • Ukraine
  • South Korea
  • Cuba

Whether I reach all of these places and how long it takes me I have no idea. However, my desire to explore is as strong as ever and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. As the name says… Just travelling through.
